beneath this stone reposes
HENRY TRACY COXWELL,
the greatest of all aeronauts.
His ascents into the heavens
were innumerable: and on 5th
September 1862 he attained
to the great height of more
than seven miles. This is the
highest point ever reached by
man. Having thus in life
approached more nearly than
mortal the gates of the infinite
he has now in death with a
true and stedfast faith passed
through into rest everlasting.

[ Marble scroll. Coxwell referred to himself as an
Aeronaut rather than balloonist.
The scroll was commissioned by his wife,
as was the memorial to Henry in St Peter's Church.
The variant spellings Tracy and Tracey
occur throughout Henry's life. ]
