This page pulls together tables of Seaford family surnames. Firstly, Henry Simmons (A28), Seaford resident and Bailiff, collected a list of 144 old family names. They were "found in the Town Records, Parish Registers, &c., resident in the Town and Port.". They are sorted alphabetically and by year, the years presumably being those in which Simmons first found a reference. As Simmons noted elsewhere spellings have varied down the years - eg: Gorring and Gorringe.
Secondly Forebears has a count of Seaford surnames from the 1881 Census. This is given below, with the counts for the same names as recorded "now" in our namelists. It isn't a strictly accurate comparison, of course, but shows some trends.
The next table shows the counts of the most commonly recorded surnames in the SeaMIG namelists. Cremation has become increasingly preferred to traditional burial (as well as rather less expensive), and on average a third of plots in the cemetery have no lasting memorials (some Blocks as many as two-thirds). Our lists cannot be called complete, therefore, and are included purely for interest. Likewise the final table shows the popularity of surnames by initial letter, explaining why some Names Index pages are much longer than others. | |
